Her professional surname is Shelbia, which she adopted from the Tunisian-Jewish family of her Djerbian great-grandmother (of both Sephardi Jewish and Mizrahi Jewish descent). Just before turning 16, she started posting selfies that she had taken by herself on Instagram.
She subsequently got an opportunity to shoot images from the seasoned photographer Marina Moskowitz when she saw her photos on her Instagram account. Her history as an Orthodox Jew has drawn further media interest since she observes Shabbat and stays Kosher, which at first caused controversy in Shelbia’s Orthodox Jewish religious community back in her home Israel.
